About the books

These books introduce ideas we think are really important for building a successful career focused on tackling the world’s most pressing problems. We think you’ll really like them — although we know the authors and we wrote one of them, so we’re a bit biased!

The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity

By Oxford philosopher and 80,000 Hours trustee Toby Ord. It's about the greatest threats facing humanity, and the strategies we can use today to safeguard our future.

Doing Good Better: Effective Altruism and How You Can Make a Difference

By philosopher and 80,000 Hours cofounder Will MacAskill. It's about how we can have a bigger positive social impact using some core ideas from the effective altruism movement.

80,000 Hours: Find a Fulfilling Career That Does Good

By our president and cofounder Benjamin Todd. Our book is based on years of research alongside academics at Oxford, and aims to help you find a career you enjoy, you're good at, and that tackles the world's most pressing problems. (Right now, the paperback is an older version of the book — read the current version on our site).

About 80,000 Hours

80,000 Hours provides research and support to help students and graduates switch into careers that effectively tackle the world’s most pressing problems. We’re a nonprofit, and everything we provide is free.

80,000 Hours started in 2011 when our founders, Ben and Will, were about to graduate from Oxford, and were wondering what to do with their own careers. They wanted to make a difference, but the standard advice didn’t have much to say about which paths would be highest impact. So they started doing their own research, and eventually founded 80,000 Hours.

Their aim from the start has been to provide the advice they wish they’d had: in-depth, based on the best research available, and taking seriously the question of how to do the most good.

Since then, we’ve gone through Y Combinator, spoken to hundreds of experts, read all the relevant literature we can find, and conducted our own analyses of many career paths. Over 1,000 people have told us they’ve changed to higher-impact paths due to our advice. Read more

For this giveaway, we’ve partnered with Impact Books, who are handling all of the logistics and distribution.

Terms of our book giveaway

When you sign up to our newsletter, we’ll offer you a free copy of a book. The books are distributed by our partner, Impact Books. You can unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time with one click.

We offer paperback books, audiobooks, and ebooks. We may not be able to offer every book in every format. We’ll pay for shipping, too. We’re unable to send paperback books to some countries, though we can deliver almost everywhere.

The current books on offer are The 80,000 Hours Career Guide, The Precipice, and Doing Good Better. We might change the books at some point.

We process your data in line with our privacy policy. Any data you provide to Impact Books is processed in line with their privacy policy. Neither 80,000 Hours nor Impact Books will ever sell your data, for any reason.

We try not to fulfil orders that we think are not in the spirit of the giveaway. For example, orders that we think came from “freebie” sites.

We might also stop offering free books at any time. We have done this in the past when we’ve received many more orders than we were expecting.

In extreme cases, we may also choose not to fulfil orders that have already been made, if orders massively exceed supply or our budgeted costs. Historically, we have fulfilled the vast majority of orders made, but there has been an instance in which we didn’t fulfil orders. We’ve since improved our systems to protect against this happening again, and if we are unable to fulfil your order, we will let you know as soon as we can.
